Here’s how South Africa 2010 was for him…

Home sweet home. After just under three weeks in South Africa at the World Cup, I’m back in Blighty. Unfortunately, so is the England team, but the least said about that, the better.

I thoroughly enjoyed my time over there. The South African people have embraced the world coming to visit them, and it was delightful to receive such a warm welcome wherever we went with everybody smiling and enjoying the great atmosphere.

This is the closest England got to the top of the Table (mountain)

World Cup fever was well and truly visible over in the Rainbow Nation. Flags of the 32 competing nations flew proudly from almost every street. Staff in shops, bars and restaurants were all proudly sporting South African gold and green football jerseys. And vuvuzelas could be heard day and night, there’s always something to spoil it eh?!

Despite all the concerns regarding security and organisation before the tournament, on the whole, as far as my experience was concerned, it went well. I didn’t see or hear of any crime, I felt 100% safe at all times, and the tournament organisation of getting fans in and out of the stadia went without too many hitches.

One disappointing feature for me has been seeing so many empty seats inside the grounds. It’s a long way to go from most of the qualified nations, not to mention expensive, but ticket prices have simply priced out the local people from attending matches they would love to be at. Good old Sepp Blatter.

As well as following England, I’ve been fortunate to have been to 6 of the 10 stadia in 7 different matches. I’ve taken in Johannesburg, Port Elizabeth, Cape Town, Pretoria and Rustenburg. The ‘other’ games I attended were Ghana v Serbia, Holland v Denmark, Brazil v North Korea and Spain v Honduras. Whilst the England games were generally dreadful, it was a delight to marvel in the skills shown by the Brazilians, Spanish, Dutch and Ghanaians.

To see some of the country as well as the football was marvellous and I’d recommend South Africa as a tourist destination to everybody. It’s a beautiful country and I only wish I could have spent a little more time there.

There’s still plenty to look forward to in the 2010 World Cup and I’ve got my seat reserved in front of the TV for the semi-finals and final. Thank you South Africa, you’ve done yourselves proud.

THERE are three finals to focus on this weekend raging from the sublime to the ridiculous.

First up it’s the Championship play-off final at Wembley between Blackpool and Cardiff. And tomorrow afternoon there’s the showpiece Junior Cup Final between Largs and Linlithgow. In the evening millions of fans will settle down in front of their TV sets to take in what should be an absorbing Champions League Final between Inter Milan and Bayern Munich.

So let’s start at Wembley for what should be a cracker despite the high stakes.

They call it the £100million match and I can see Blackpool, more like a £100 outfit, mixing it with the big boys next season. Ian Holloway’s side battled into the play-offs by winning eight of their last 10 then comprehensively dumped Nottingham Forest in the semi-finals. Cardiff have been in the play-off places for most of the season and needed penalties to reach the Final at the expense of Leicester. It could either way but I’m sticking my neck and taking the tangerines at 23-10 with McBookie.com. Cardiff are 5-4 favourites with the draw 12-5.

McBookie.com customers will love the fact there are loads of Scots involved in the game. Blackpool’s star man has been ex-Rangers midfielder Charlie Adam and he is 8-1 to hit the opener. That’s a bet I like although many Gers fans will look at Cardiff’s Chris Burke who is 12-1. There should be goals galore and over 2.5 pays evens.

Madrid is the venue for the Champions League Final and Inter boss Jose Mourinho could start to feel right at home as he eyes up the trophy before a possible switch to Real in the summer. Wins over Chelsea and Barcelona have made Inter the team to fear and they are 5-4 with McBookie.com to win in 90 minutes and 4-7 on the outrights. Bayern were brilliant in taking the scalps of Man United and Lyon but Mourinho’s tactical genius could help win the day. The Germans are 5-2 with the draw 11-5 and to win overall they are 11-8.

It was Diego Milito who clinched the Serie A title last week with the winner at Chievo and the Argentine star is my tip at 9-2 with McBookie.com to score first. This one might lack goals and under 2.5 pays 8-13 while Inter are 11-2 to win 1-0.

Finally it’s back to earth with a bump for the Junior Cup Final at Kilmarnock tomorrow. The football will be less silky but no less exciting as Linlithgow go all out to live up to their favourites’ tag. For me Largs don’t possess enough of a goal threat and if Rose can break a mean defence early on the cup can be heading to the east.
