10. In a playing career that spanned almost 20 years I only played 70 games in the country of my birth. Those games earned me a move to England where I enjoyed a very successful career, winning 4 League Titles, 3 FA Cups and a European Cup. I won 27 International Caps, appeared in the World Cup Finals and was also named Football Writer’s Player of the Year.

The Germans look suspect at the back and if anyone can exploit it the Spanish can. But something deep down tells me that Germany are also the most capable of snuffing out the flair of Spain. Perhaps they’ll both cancelt each other out.

Ballack v Fabregas should be very interesting. Ballack was almost invisible in the semi-final and is apparently struggling with a knock. Fabregas came on in the other semi and helped Spain take control against Russia. This could be a key battle in the outcome of the match. Ballack is a big game player and can deliver on the biggest of stages but Fabregas’ lack of games may be a deciding factor as his fitness should give him an extra yard.

I still don’t know who to back?

I’m tempted by the 13/5 (VCBet) available on Germany – you simply shouldn’t get that price on the Germans in any final. It might also wipe that smug grin off Mr Lineker’s face on BBC1 – that would be worth it.

Otherwise backing Germany on the asian handicap might be the way to go. They’re 1/1 (VCBet) on the split handicap (0, +0.5) and that means if it ends in draw after 90 minutes I’d still get half a payout.

Spain are 13/10 to win in 90 minutes, Germany 23/10, with the draw 21/10. It is 7/2 for the game to go to a penalty shoot out with Hills who offer 8/1 Spain and 8/1 Germany to win it that way. Germany are 12/1 to win in extra time, as are Spain.

Three times champions Germany look to continue their impressive form in this competition as they enter their sixth final, but their first in twelve years. Although they started the tournament as favourites, due in part to the relative weakness of Group B, many people believed their workman like team would struggle against more skilled outfits once they reached the knockout stages

Their first real challenge came against a fancied Portuguese team, led by Cristiano Ronaldo, who had been impressive in their first two group games. However, early goals from Bastain Schweinsteiger and Miroslav Klose gave the Portuguese a shock they could not recover from, despite Nuno Gomes’ reply five minutes from half time. Germany were never truly stretched, and in the 62nd minute Ballack sealed it with a header from a Schweinsteiger free kick, despite Postiga’s consolation goal three minutes from time.

Their semi final win over a depleted Turkey was not as comfortable, as first they had to come from behind, and then score in injury time to seal their place in Vienna. They were big favourites to beat the injury ravaged Turks, but were outplayed in the first half, and were fortunate to be level at half time. Ugar Boral had given Turkey a deserved lead after they dominated the opening twenty minutes, but that lead lasted just five minutes as Schweinsteiger flicked in a cross from Podolski. In a tight second half Klose looked to have won it for the Germans ten minutes from time as he capitalised on a mistake from Rustu to head Germany into the lead. However the Turks have made scoring late goals their speciality in this tournament, and did it again for the fourth game in a row, thanks to Semih Sentruck, and everyone prepared for extra time. Everyone except Phillip Lahm that is, as his surging run from full back caught the Turks napping, and he lashed home Hitzlsperger‘s pass from six yards to seal Germany’s place in the final.

Spain have been the neutral’s choice due to their open and exciting approach, and are the tournament’s top scorers with 11 goals, one more than the Germans, while David Villa is the top scorer so far with four, three of which came in their opening game, where they swept aside the Russians 4-1. Consecutive 2-1 wins in their final two group games against Sweden and Greece earned them top spot in Group D, and a quarter final clash with the Italians.

The two sides took very different approaches to the game, resulting in Spain dominating the 90 minutes as their attacking brand of football was restrained by the Italians typical defensive position. Spain had the best chances in normal time, coming closest to scoring when Buffon spilled Marco Senna’a shot, only to see it hit the post and come back into his arms. The match inevitably went to penalties and looked set to favour the Italians, as it looked as though they had played for that outcome since the start. History was also not on Spain’s side, as they had previously lost three quarter finals by penalty shot outs, all on the 22nd June. However, this time they held their nerve to win the shoot out 4-2, Casillas saving two kicks to give Fabregas the chance to shoot the Spanish into the final.

Their semi final pitted them against their opponents from the first round, a Russian team this time with Andrei Arshavin. The opening half was tight, with both teams predictably cancelling each other out following their opening group game. The second half saw the attacking Spain of the last three weeks emerge, with Fabregas, who had come on for an injured David Villa, opening the scoring on 50 minutes. Guiza and Silva then put the game beyond the Russians with strikes in the 73rd and 82nd minute respectively, to seal Spain’s first tournament final place since the Euros of 1984.

The word crisis doesn’t quite cover the situation Turkey find themsleves in ahead of one the biggest games in the country’s history. From a squad of 23, Fatih Terim faces the prospect of having just 13 fit outfield players. Injuries and suspensions have hit them hard and the last thing they need is to be facing tournament favourites Germany for a place in the final.

Incredibly, Turkey have led for under 3 minutes in this tournament yet find themselves just one game away from the final due to their never-say-die attitude. Last minute goals have become the norm for the Turkish fans but surely this one will be a step too far for the plucky Turks. Even with a fully fit squad to choose from Terim’s men would still be underdogs so it’s no surprise that Germany are short-priced favourites at just 4/9 (888 Sport, Bet365, Blue Sq, Boylesports, Coral, Paddy Power, Skybet, Totesport, VCBet, William Hill) in the circumstances.

Germany are coming to the boil quite nicely and go into this one off the back of an impressive 3-2 win over the much-fancied Portuguese. That quarter-final was the first time in the tournament that the Germans looked like justifying their favourites tag. With a full squad to choose from nothing less than a comfortable win is expected from Joachim Low’s men.

The Germans looked a more balanced team against Portugal. Gomez was at last dropped and Bastian Schweinsteiger provided more drive from midfield alongside the impressive Michael Ballack.

Turkey are as big as 15/2 (Bet Direct, Canbet, Centrebet, Coral, Stan James, William Hill) and I doubt they’ll have many backers to win in 90 minutes. The bet has to be with Germany tonight. They’re a short price but it looks like a license to print money.

If Germany can come out of the traps in the same way they did against Portugal then the 11/10 (Centrebet, Coral, VCBet) on them winning at half time and full time could be a good bet.

Michael Ballack has gradually got better with each game and we can exect another big performance when it matters. He’s 4/1 (Bet365) to be man of the match and 11/5 (Boylesports) to get his name on the scoresheet. I’ll be having a wee dabble on each of these.

Other contenders include Podolski (11/1), Torres (11/1), Casillas (12/1), Fabregas (16/1), Pavlyuchenko (18/1) and Klose (20/1). All at Paddy Power.

Alongside the Dutch, Spain were the most impressive team in the Group stages, and if the form guide is anything to go by then Russia’s win over Holland last night puts the Spanish clearly ahead of Italy tonight. Spain trounced Russia 4-1 in their opener but personally I think the scoreline flattered the Spanish and the Russians were without influential playmaker Arshavin for that one.

That’s not to say I don’t rate Spain – I do. I’m just not convinced about the hype that has engulfed them and saw them become favourites for the title early last week. Torres and Villa have been superb and look a handful for any defence but it’ll be a sterner test for them tonight against a defence that have been there and done it. This is another level for Spain and if they can come through this one then they can definitely be considered favourites to win the tournament.

Italy have not hit anywhere near top gear yet. Questions remain as to whether this team are actually capable of doing so. But their big tournament experience makes them a very dangerous proposition for the Spanish. They’ve rode their luck in qualifying through the Group but every team needs the breaks if they’re going to progress. But the Italians will know that they’ve earned the right to be there tonight and those tough games in Group C may mean they’re more prepared than their opponents for tonight’s battle.

Roberto Donadoni will be without Rino Gattuso and the influential Andrea Pirlo through suspension. A lot will depend on whether Cassano can replicate his Sampdoria form and if the much maligned Luca Toni can find his scoring boots. He’s looked sluggish and out of sorts but you can’t expect that he’ll go through the whole tournament without a goal. He’s 13/2 (888 Sport, Boylesports, Blue Sq, Paddy Power, Skybet, Sportingbet, Totesport) to score first tonight and is 12/5 (Paddy Power) to score at anytime – that might be worth a look.

I think it’ll be Italy that progress to face Russian in the semi-final and here’s a few reasons why;

• It’s not about how you start but about how you finish – No team ever wins a tournament in their first game. Spain peaked in their 4-1 win over Russia but have not recaptured that form in the other two games. Italy are past masters at improving throughout tournaments so expect them to gradually get better
• Lightning does strike twice (or maybe four times) - An incredible statistic is that Spain have lost 3 times in the last 22 years on penalty shoot-outs on 22nd June. Will history repeat itself yet again? Italy are 9/1 (Boylesports) to win on pens.
• History favours the Italians – Spain appear to have a mental block when it comes to beating Italy in competitive matches. They haven’t done so since a 2-0 win at the 1920 Olympic Games – their only win in 9.
• ‘Resting’ players hasn’t worked - In the previous 3 quarter finals this week the teams that topped their group and chose to rest players in their final games have all gone out. Perhaps momentum has been lost and it is something that Spain will need to be wary of having played reserves against Greece.

So it’s Italy for me. 9/4 (Skybet, VCBet) to win in 90 minutes is very tempting. They’re 11/10 (Bet Direct, Betfred, Ladbrokes, Stan James) to qualify from the tie and that looks a slightly safer option. I might l also have a little nibble at that 9/1 (Boylesports) penalty shoot-out win.

Turkey gave us one of the most thrilling moments of Euro 2008 so far on Sunday. When Nihat Kahveci curled an 89th minute winner high into Petr Cech’s goal he completed of the most dramatic comebacks in European Championship history and sent Turkey into tomorrow’s quarter final against in-form Croatia.

Naturally, the Turk’s will be on a high after that last-gasp win but I just wonder if that last 15 minutes has seen them peak too soon. They were dead and buried with half an hour to go but fair play to them, they dug in and they dominated the last 30 minutes. It was a supreme effort and one which could have sapped the energy out of Fatih Terim’s men, both physically and emotionally.

Veteran goalkeeper Rustu Recber is set for his 117th cap as captain Volkan Demirel is suspended after his late altercation with Jan Koller, whilst Mehmet Aurelio is also suspended.

Croatia have lived upto their billing as tournament dark-horses after negotiating Group B with 3 straight wins. It might have been a surprise to some but not super-confident Slaven Bilic who has a job on his hands just to keep the nation’s feet on the ground. Much like he said ahead of their opener against Austria, the Croatian coach states, “We’re a better team than Turkey.” And he’s right. Man for man Croatia have the beating of Turkey.

The Croatians are looking to take a step further than they’ve ever been at the European Championships and I think they can do so tonight. They’re capable of passing any team off the park and my concerns about their lack of goals have been unfounded so far. Turkey will draw huge strength from their fightback against the Czechs and will believe they can cause another upset in this one but they’ll need to move up another level to overcome Croatia.

The bookies seem to agree and have Croatia at just 10/11 (Boylesports, Skybet, Totesport). It’s a shortish price but it looks like the one to go with tonight.

Tonight sees the first quarter final of the Euro 2008 Championships and it’s the game that both countries wanted to avoid. Portugal and Germany were both expected to top their group thereby avoiding each other until the semi final, however each of them will feel that if they win this one then the final is a distinct possibility with either Croatia or Turkey standing between them and that final place. But who will make it through between two of the pre-tournament favourites?

Portugal breezed through their group with impressive wins over Turkey and Czech Republic securing their qualification before an under-strengthed eleven succumbed to host nation Switzerland in a meaningless final game. With the likes of Deco, Petit, Nani and Ronaldo at his disposal, Phil Scolari has plenty of flair to call upon. I don’t think ROnaldo has quite hit his peak so far at Euro 2008 but his form is bubbling under quite nicely. Tonight is the kind of game that he has to deliver in to truly be crowned the best player in the world.

So no pressure there then!

As for Germany, they stuttered out of their group without ever really hitting top gear. An unconvincing 1-0 win over Austria was enough to secure second spot in Group B after a slightly surprising 2-1 defeat to Croatia had put their qualification hopes in doubt. Given the group that they were in I always thought Germany might take a while to get going and they showed a glimmer of form in the opening spell of the second half against Austria but they’ll need to move up another level to see off Portugal tonight.

Personally, I think Joachim Löw is still stuggling to find his best eleven. He’s persevered with the dismal Gomez and he may be forced to pick him again since Podolski looks to be struggling with a knock. It will be interesting to see if he will shake things up a bit tonight. Michael Ballack finally announced his arrival at the tournament witha stunning free-kick last time out and Germany need a big big performance from him tonight.

Unsurprisingly the bookies reckon Portugal have the edge in this one and they’re justifiably favourites at 6/4 (888 Sport, Betfred, Blue Sq, Boylesports, Coral, Paddy Power, Skybet), whereas the Germans are best priced at 9/4 (Bet365, Bet Direct, Centrebet, Ladbrokes, Stan James).

Never write off the Germans they say and I’m not about to tonight. Portugal’s lack of a true goalscorer – Ronaldo aside – has always been a concern for me as has their ‘keeper, Ricardo. Germany’s stopper, Lehmann, isn’t much better mind you but I think in Klose and Podolski they pose the greater goal threat if their midfield can get to grips with Ronaldo and co.

At 11/10 (Bet365, BetInternet, Coral, Ladbrokes, Paddy Power, William Hill) to qualify I think the Germans look good value. Given their incredible record in spot kicks you’d have to fancy them if it goes the distance. They haven’t even missed a penalty kick in a shoot out since 1982, winning the last 4 on the trot.

Miroslav Klose has yet to find the back of the net in the tournament but he has a great record at this level and is 11/4 (William Hill) to find his scoring touch at anytime night. That might be worth a small wager.
