Mark Lawrenson does his weekly predictions on the BBC Sport site and I reckon I can do better, we’ll actually anyone could do better. The idea is simple; go head-to-head with Lawro and predict the score of the Premier League. The twist is that there’s a mythical tenner riding on each result, so who can win the most money based on the odds from Bet365?

How it works…

• You’ll choose one Premier League team to win their game each week. If it wins you stay in the game, if it loses you’re out.
• You cannot choose the same team twice, so pick carefully.
• The winner will be the player who is the Last Man Standing

How to take part…

• You must place a £10 bet on the team you have chosen in Round One.
• If your team wins you must bet your accumulated amount on the team you select in Round Two and so on (so if your first team wins at 2/1, you should be staking £30 on your team in Round Two).
• In addition you must also post your chosen team each week on the Forum thread so that we can keep track of who is still standing.

What you can win..

The small print

For midweek ‘Rounds’ where the first game kicks off at 7.45pm or later, all selections must be in by 7pm. Weekend Rounds will include games played on Saturday – Monday. • Should you forget to make your selection in any week, you will automatically be assigned the first team that you have not selected in alphabetical order. Once a team is automatically selected, you will not have the ability to change the selection.

• However, that team will no longer be available for selection.
• Should two or more participants remain standing and all are eliminated in the same week, the Last Man Standing prize will be distributed equally among them.
• Should a Tournament not have reached a conclusion by the end of the 2010/2011 Premier League Season, the Tournament will continue on in to the next Season. Any relegated teams that you had not selected yet will be lost, but promoted teams will then be available.
• In the event of any disputes, Selectabet’s decision is final.

Last time I did this it ended with a bit of a whimper as I finished the year in the black – but only just. So I’m giving it a go again in 2011. The idea is that I start with £250 and try to make it to £10,000 over the course of 12 months betting on football.

My favoured bet will probably be betting on the Under/Over 2.5 goals markets as that has given me most success in the past but I’ll be casting my eyes over everything and if anything takes my fancy I’ll be piling in.

I won’t bet any more that half my stake on ANY bet, that means my losses are minimised and I can keep control of my bank.

I’m going to start off with the match between Sparta Rotterdam and Go Ahead Eagles in the Dutch First Division to finish Over 2.5 goals.

Despite sitting 9th in the table Sparta are the third highest scorers in the league with 39 goals in 16 games to almost score 2.5 goals per game themselves. Go Ahead aren’t too far behind them on 32 and have score 15 in their last 4. Furthermore Sparta have scored 31 of their 39 at home, almost 4 a game.

Matches between the two appear to produce goals too. 8 of the last 10 have seen more than 2 goals and on only occasion has either side failed to score.

Paddy Power have some of the best odds on this market and go 8/15 on the Over 2.5 option.

Tonight’s England v Algeria match looks a cert to be a win for Capello’s men but at 1/4 is it worth the risk, especially after seeing Spain and Germany succumb to so-called minnows. I’ve looked at loads of markets from time of the first goal through to England scoring 3 or more but I think it could be tight.

In the end I’ve gone with a small bet of £60 on England to be leading at halftime which is priced at 1.65 with Betfair, whihc seems reasonable enough, when you consider the strong(ish) 1st half they had against USA.

I’m tempted to go big on Brazil on the Asian Handicap tonight but the odds only really start to appeal if I back them to win by 3 or more. The way things are going at this World Cup I’m not so sure that many teams will try to win by 3 or 4 if they don’t need to. But Surely Brazil wouldn’t let me down would they? They owe it to the world of football fans to bring this sorry excuse for a tournament to life. Surely they won’t settle for a 1-0 win. Surely?

Backing Brazil just on the win market is the most sensible way to but at odds of just 1/9 (Paddy Power) I’d only win just over £30 even if I staked my entire balance on it. So I need to find the value elsewhere. The Asian Handicap is the most obvious place to look but as I mentioned it only really gets interesting with Brazil at -2.5 of a start.

I did consider betting on the shirt numbers (the total value of the goal-scorers shirts) but Brazil go with numbers 1-11 in their squad. I’ve also looked at North Korea picking up the most bookings, but that was just 2/5.

In the end I’ve gone with betChronicle’s 10/11 on Brazil on the split Asian Hnadicap at -2/-2.5, so I really need them to win by 3. Win by two and I get half my stake back. I’ve also stuck a cheeky £20 on there to be a penalty awarded, which would be the first of the tournament. I tipped Brazil to score one tonight before the tournament but had to take Boylesport’s 13/5 on one being awarded.

• Bet 12 – Brazil to win on Asian Handicap -2/-2.5. £60 at 10/11 with betChronicle
• Bet 13 – A penalty to be awarded. £20 at 13/5 with Boylesports.

Drogba starts on the bench but their side still includes the likes of Eboue, Dindane, Toure x2 and Kalou. Their a strong, powerful outfit and will give most sides a game. But they’re underdogs at 3/1 (Coral) to beat a Portugal side who look past their best. The dangerous Ronaldo has a point to prove for the Portuguese, he’s not scored for his nation for over a year and this is his stage. Truth is this could go either way so 3/1 on the Ivory Coast looks the best value.

I’m hoping for some goals though, even although none of the games have really come to life just yet. Both teams to score looks good to me so I’ll have some of that. It’s 6/5 at William Hill. After the last result I’m going to be a wee bit more cautious and staking £50 of my £374.18 balance. I’m also going with that Ivory Coast win since I can’t resist the 3/1 odds, especially as they’ll have Drogba to bring off the bench if they’re chasing the win.

• Bet 10: Ivory Coast v Portgual – Both teams to score. £50 at 6/5 with William Hill.
• Bet 11: Ivory Coast to win. £10 at 3/1 with Coral.

I can take heart from Australia’s poor showing against Germany in the comfort that New Zealand didn’t even need to beat them to make it to South Africa, so goodness know how low down the International pecking order they really are.

Best odds available are 11/20 at betChronicle. My updated balance is £494.18 (I lost out on Over 2.5 goals last night) and I’m going with a stake of £120.00 on this one.

It’s probably a daft bet but I think sometimes you need to take a bit of value too so fingers crossed we get a goalfest.

I’ve kept the stake pretty low so as to minimise my risk.

I’ve gone with Holland in their game v Denmark that’s just kicking-off. I’m a wee bit cautious because I think the Danes could be underestimated and maybe cancel the Dutch out a bit. However, I couldn’t really find any other bet that caught my eye.

Took 1.57 at Betfair and I’m having £100 on it.
