It’s an all-Premier League affair in the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup as Arsenal welcome Southampton to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday night. The two sides have already locked horns in the league earlier this season and have history in the EFL Cup, having repeated this week’s fixture two years ago in the third round.
Arsenal v Southampton
November 30 2016
Arsenal come into Wednesday’s clash in decent form, having earned points against the likes of Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, capping it off with a win against Bournemouth to make it 19 games unbeaten ahead of this week’s meeting with Southampton. Arsenal beat Nottingham Forest 4-0 in the third round before seeing past Reading in the last-16 booked their place in the quarter-finals, and they go into Wednesday’s game as favourites to reach the semis. Arsenal are 17/20 with Bet365 to win against Southampton.
As for their opponents, Southampton have come through a difficult run of games with a win over Everton most recently. Claude Puel’s men have taken points off Manchester City and Liverpool while beating Inter Milan in the Europa League, and won’t be overawed facing Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium. Southampton enjoyed a narrow win over the Gunners two years ago in the third round of the competition and were denied a point at the death when the two sides met in the league in September.
Arsenal went nearly six weeks without a home in the Premier League before their win over Bournemouth so Southampton might feel they are somewhat vulnerable at the Emirates Stadium especially if they’re resting a number of key players as expected. Southampton are 18/5 with Betfred to win against Arsenal. Nevertheless, Arsenal are still unbeaten since the opening day of the season and have avoided defeat to stellar opposition that will suggest they can give Southampton a hard time.
