Sevilla’s 14-month undefeated home run will be tested on Saturday when they entertain La Liga leaders Barcelona.
Unai Emery’s fifth-placed outfit are riding a 26-game undefeated run at the Sanchez Pizjuan Stadium; their last home defeat was Barcelona’s last visit when the Catalan club ran out 4-1 victors.
As well an impressive home run, Sevilla won their last five La Liga games to move within one point of Valencia and a Champions League qualification spot. Last time out, they overcame Levante 2-0 without their top scorer Carlos Bacca (17) in the start line-up courtesy of first-half goals from Kevin Gameiro and Jose Reyes.
While Sevilla are in formidable form, Luis Enrique’s men are the only side in a better run of form as Wednesday’s resounding 4-0 victory over Almeria extended Barcelona’s winning streak to six league games.
A Luis Suarez brace and goals from Lionel Messi and Marc Bartra ensured the win last time out to maintain their four-point advantage over second-placed Real Madrid.
Saturday’s encounter will see Barca midfielder Ivan Rakitic return to Andalusia following his £16 million summer move. The Croatian featured in over 130 games in three and a half seasons at Sevilla before making the move to Catalonia and he admits returning will be a special occasion for him.
“Everything I experienced there left deep impression,” Rakіtіc told fcbarcelona.com.
“The city will always have a special place in my heart. I lived there for three and a half years so it’ll be a very special game.
“I want to focus on my game and play well. We’ve got eight matches to go this season and to win this game would be pretty big.”
Despite Sevilla’s strong form, it will likely prove too difficult to halt Barcelona’s push for the La Liga title. The league leaders have won their last six encounters with the Rojiblancos and Totesport are offering 8/13 for them to continue that impressive run.
