T Pironkova 7/4 Bet365 to defeat K Knapp – The Bulgarian hasn’t done much all year since her big win in Sydney and indeed hasn’t won a WTA tour match since the French Open. However she has reached the 4th round here before back in 2012 so knows she can play well and it may just be time to break that losing run. Knapp is a decent player, but prefers clay. She isn’t in great form either. Pironkova is not a player to bet a fortune on, but at least you will be entertained. Decent price, but low stakes only.
V Razzano 11/8 Bet365 to defeat J Larsson – The French player is also lacking wins in 2014 and is on the verge of dropping out of the WTA top 200. She is however a decent hardcourt player and has wins at Flushing Meadow over Hingis, Bartoli and Kanepi, a lot will depend on her fitness and mental state. Larsson is a decent player but I see her more of a clay courter and has no weapons that will hurt Razzano. I think Virginie is a decent price, but as always low stakes
P Carreno-Busta 5/4 Bet365 to beat A Beck – The German has qualified so is match fit, used to conditions and ready. However he is a better clay courter and has spent much of the last few years on the ATP Challenger tour in Europe. Carreno-Busta is also someone who prefers clay, but the Spaniard is very talented and is capable on all surfaces. Pablo though is still looking for his 1st Grand Slam match win and this is his first US Open. Interesting match up and could be close.
J McGee 6/5 Bet365 to beat Nedovyesov – The big story of qualifying Ireland’s James McGee. He will get huge support from the crowd and this is arguably the biggest match of his career. He was impressive in qualifying so knows he can win and has just broken into the ATP top 200 so again on an upward curve. Nedovyesov was very consistent on the ATP Challenger circuit which moved his ranking right up inside the ATP top 100. He is though not used to these big events either. Big match for both, but lets get behind the Irishman
A Schmeidlova 5/4 to defeat A Sasnovich – 2 very fine youngsters and although Sasnovich qualified, the Slovakian Schmiedlova is already in the WTA top 100 and will probably have the bigger career. Both probably like clay more but I think Anna is a big price, though I want Aliaksandra to win!!!
All the above are outsiders in their matches, so low stakes only. Other winners on day 1 should include….. Benneteau, Stepanek, Pospisil, Bencic, Puig and Errani
