Saturday’s lunchtime kick-off sees two evenly matched teams go head-to-head at Villa Park.
Live on BT Sport. Kick Off: Saturday 12:45pm
Villa’s 1-0 win away to Stoke was one of the most unexpected of the opening weekend and they’ll be hoping to build on that today with a win over Newcastle. But a word of caution. This time last season Villa had just won their first match in a stunning victory at the Emirates before then going on to lose their next three. Inconsistency pervades Villa’s performances so don’t be surprised of Jeckyl to last week’s Hyde turns up today.
Goalscoring has been a regular problem for Paul Lambert’s side. Just 39 goals were scored in the Premier League last season – 10 of them from Benteke who is out injured. They scored no more than one goal in 10 of their last 11 fixtures so if the Toon can get on the scoresheet they’ve a good chance of leaving Villa Park with at least a point.
There’s a lot to like about the new-look Newcastle side. Cabella and Riviere could light up the North East this season having bagged 24 Ligue 1 goals between them last term. Alan Pardew’s men suffered a 2-0 defeat to Man City last week but we’re disgraced.
They’ve won on their last 2 visits to Villa Park and you have to go back to August 2010 for Villa’s last win in this fixture.
The signs are there that this could be a tight match with Newcastle doing enough to take a least a point.
