WTA Madrid: S Halep v P Kvitova

Simona Halep eased past Ana Ivanovic in the QF of WTA Madrid and is very close to surpassing Vika Azarenka as the new WTA number 4. Her form in the last 12 months has been remarkable and it looks like Simona’s going to be around near the top of the rankings long term rather than a one season wonder. Halep plays Czech number 1 Petra Kvitova in the semi-finals. Petra had a walkover in the quarters as Serena Williams pulled out with a thigh injury. Kvitova certainly has the ability and power to take out Simona, but the Romanian has far more consistency at the moment and if Kvitova comes out laboured then Halep could win easily. If an extra day’s rest is what Kvitova needed then the Czech could benefit. With Serena out there is a huge opportunity for these two players to reach the final, so expect a mixture of nerves and brilliant shot making
