Last season, Wigan Athletic and Doncaster Rovers were two divisions apart. On Tuesday evening, they meet on a level playing field in the SkyBet Championship at the DW Stadium.
Wigan enjoyed a topsy-turvy season last time around. Roberto Martinez led the team to FA Cup glory against Manchester City at Wembley and just 3 days after the final, they were relegated from the Premier League. There has been a lot of change with the Latics since, not least with Martinez leaving to join Everton and former Burnley and Bolton boss Owen Coyle taking the hotseat.
They got off to a flying start this season with a 4-0 away win over Barnsley on the opening day of the campaign. But that was followed up by a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United in the Community Shield and a 1-0 defeat away at Bournemouth in the league last Saturday with winger Callum McManaman receiving a red card and so he will be missing for this game.
Their visitors, Doncaster, are also new to the Championship having won League One last season. They also have experienced a managerial change with Brian Flynn stepping aside to be replaced by former Oldham Athletic boss Paul Dickov.
Rovers have enjoyed a similar start to the league campaign to Wigan with one win and one defeat to their name so far. That victory came at the expense of Blackburn Rovers on Friday evening, following an opening day defeat at home to Blackpool.
Looking at both squads, Wigan are rightly favourites. They have kept the bulk of the squad which played Premier League football last season, and they have replaced players they have lost with good quality in the likes of goalkeeper Scott Carson and striker Grant Holt.
Paul’s prediction: Wigan 3-0 Doncaster – 11/1 (William Hill)
