Championship: Wigan v Doncaster – preview & tips

Last season, Wigan Athletic and Doncaster Rovers were two divisions apart. On Tuesday evening, they meet on a level playing field in the SkyBet Championship at the DW Stadium.

Wigan enjoyed a topsy-turvy season last time around. Roberto Martinez led the team to FA Cup glory against Manchester City at Wembley and just 3 days after the final, they were relegated from the Premier League. There has been a lot of change with the Latics since, not least with Martinez leaving to join Everton and former Burnley and Bolton boss Owen Coyle taking the hotseat.

They got off to a flying start this season with a 4-0 away win over Barnsley on the opening day of the campaign. But that was followed up by a 2-0 defeat to Manchester United in the Community Shield and a 1-0 defeat away at Bournemouth in the league last Saturday with winger Callum McManaman receiving a red card and so he will be missing for this game.

Their visitors, Doncaster, are also new to the Championship having won League One last season. They also have experienced a managerial change with Brian Flynn stepping aside to be replaced by former Oldham Athletic boss Paul Dickov.

Rovers have enjoyed a similar start to the league campaign to Wigan with one win and one defeat to their name so far. That victory came at the expense of Blackburn Rovers on Friday evening, following an opening day defeat at home to Blackpool.

The hosts are strong favourites to take the spoils from this fixture with the best price for them to win the game being 8/13 (Coral). Doncaster can be backed at 6/1 (Paddy Power) to provide an upset.

Looking at both squads, Wigan are rightly favourites. They have kept the bulk of the squad which played Premier League football last season, and they have replaced players they have lost with good quality in the likes of goalkeeper Scott Carson and striker Grant Holt.

Players like Holt and Scotland international Shaun Maloney will be good bets to open the scoring for Owen Coyle’s side at 4/1 (SkyBet) and 6/1 (Ladbrokes) respectively.

Paul’s prediction: Wigan 3-0 Doncaster – 11/1 (William Hill)

I've been writing betting previews for Selectabet since 2010. My specialist subject is football. I'm a Tranmere Rovers and England supporter and have plenty of experience of Spanish and Italian football having lived out in both countries. I cover the English Premier League, English Football League, Spanish La Liga and Italian Serie A for the site. I am a general sports nut though and also cover cricket, tennis and darts.
