It’s the big kick-off for most of the major leagues across Europe today and that includes Turkey where Süper Lig runners-up Fenerbahce get their campaign started away to newly promoted Torku Konyaspor.
Konyaspor managed promotion to the top courtesy of a play-off win, after finishing 5th in the Turkish second tier last season. It was a lack of goals that prevented them from finishing any higher, scoring just 35 in 34 games, however they did only lose 25 throughout the season. Without goals in the team it could be repeat of their yo-yo season of 2010-11 where they were immediately relegated back to the first division.
Fenerbahce will be aiming to close the 10-gap between themselves and Galatasaray last season but their extra-time defeat to their arch-rivals in the recent Turkish Super Cup doesn’t bode well. That game alongside two Champions League qualifiers against SV Salzburg means Ersun Yanal’s should already be into their stride this season.
Their record against Konyaspor is what has really caught the eye. They’ve won their last 10 meetings with an aggregate score of 35-8.
My only concern is the fact that Fener have some very important Champions League duty to deal with on Wednesday when Arsenal come calling in teh first leg of their play-off. If players are rested then this might be a tighter game than it should be but I’m hopeful that they’ll still have enough to see of the promoted side.
