Hibs v Motherwell
Scottish Premiership. Kick Off: Sunday 4th August 1.15pm. Live on Sky Sports 1.
The domestic season hasn’t even kicked off yet and already Hibs boss Pat Fenlon is under pressure. That’s what a 9-0 aggregate defeat to Malmo does for you.
The Irishman has a job on is hands to pick his players up after that drubbing but when they look round the dressing they’ll see they’re bereft of talismanic striker Leigh Griffiths. The hitman scored 23 goals for the Hibees last season but has returned to his parent club, Wolves and will be huge loss for the Edinburgh club. As proven by those two European legs against Malmo, scoring goals could be a problem.
Motherwell’s season got off to a losing start in Europe too. The Steelemen succumbed to a 2-0 loss at home to Djibril Cisse’s Kuban Krasnodar but the signs are whole lot brighter for Well’s season prospects.
James McFadden has penned a permanent deal and they’ve signed Celtic’s former title winning captain, Stephen McManus who will add some experience in defence.
Motherwell will be seeking to emulate last season’s second placed finish and I’m surprised as well as delighted to see them at 6/5 (Ladbrokes) to win today. Man for man I think Well are a better side, confidence is sure to be low at Easter Road and Fenlon has an injury and suspension list as long as his arm including the likes of Clancy, Cairney, Vine and McPake.
