Partick Thistle v Dundee Utd
Scottish Premiership. Kick Off: Friday 2nd Aug 7.45pm. Live on BT Sport 1
The opening fixture of the inaugural (but not really any different) Scottish Premiership sees former Partick Thistle boss Jackie McNamara make a quick return to Firhill.
Circumstances surrounding his departure should ensure a hostile reception and adds a fair bit of spice to Thistle’s return to the top flight. Expect Firhill to be bouncing.
The match also sees the return of Chris Erskine and Paul Paton to their former stomping ground. Erskine was the pick of the bunch in United’s recent tour of Germany and alongside the addition of Ciftci, Graham and David Goodwillie he’ll be expected to fill the gaps left by the departing Johnny Russell, Willow Flood, John Daly and Barry Douglas in a new-look United side.
Thistle have moved to strengthen their side and added a mix of experience and youth. Most exciting of the new arrivals could be Henoc Mukendi from Liverpool. The 19-year-old Congolese striker comes with a good reputation and will be aiming to make his mark early doors.
United should too strong for the newly promoted Jags but with it being the first game of the season and with a point to prove to McNamara I think they can get something out of the game. United don’t look as strong as they were this time last season so three points isn’t beyond Thistle here.
If you disagree United can be backed at 6/4 with BetVictor, otherwise take the 11/10 (Paddy Power) on Partick Thistle in the Draw No Bet Market, which offers more value than the 2/1 (Paddy Power) on them to win outright.
I expect this will be a fairly open game and we should hopefully see some goals. Over 2.5 goals can be backed at 1/1 with Boylesports whilst Both Teams to Score is available at a best price 3/4 (BetVictor).
As is often the case, returning players can come back to haunt their old club. The aforementioned Erskine has a keen eye for goal, netting 14 for Thistle last term. If he starts could be worth a punt to score anytime at 10/3 with William Hill. For Thistle Mukendi is also 10/3 at William Hill.
