The flat turf season finally begins to get underway, with a top card on at Doncaster and Kempton today, including the Doncaster Mile and Snowdrop Fillies’ Stakes.
I’ve got a couple of fancies at Doncaster today, including one in the aforementioned Listed race over a mile. The Doncaster Mile at 2:20 only features the 6 runners, meaning little in the way of e/w value.
However Chandlery looks a massive price at 11/2 with race sponsor Bet365. The Richard Hannon horse is lightly-raced, has been off the track since 2011, but holds an entry into the Group 1 Lockinge Stakes later this year, so the yard are obviously confident he remains the ability shown when last seen, winning a Group 2 at Goodwood. Admittedly this will be a massive test for him today, but with Ryan Moore on board I have confidence.
In the next race, a Class 3 handicap, an old favourite of mine features. Mark Johnston’s 4 year old Fennell Bay has had a comeback run last month at Lingfield, but has previously shown much more on turf, including winning a couple of high quality handicaps last summer culminating in the King George at Royal Ascot. He’s struggled since then, being pushed up the weights, but has returned to a winnable mark now, only 1lb higher than that King George success.
He was also gelded in the winter, which should help his consistency this term. The horse is best price 8/1 generally, including at Bet365 who again sponsor this.
2:20 Doncaster – Chandlery 11/2
2:55 Doncaster – Fennell Bay 8/1
Double – 57.5/1 Bet365
Good luck if you’re having a flutter.
