SPL – Saturday 9th March, KO 3pm
We successfully opposed Dundee last weekend in the derby cup tie against Dundee Utd and this week I am happy to oppose them again with the visit of 3rd placed Inverness.
I’ve no doubt that big Terry Butcher will be less than pleased with his sides performances since the turn of the year. In that period Inverness have been a little out of sorts and have only managed 9 league points out of a possible 23, however, they still find themselves just 3pts off 2nd placed Motherwell and with a win tomorrow could see them leapfrog the steelmen back into 2nd spot.
It’s scoring goals that strangely seems to be a bit of a problem for Inverness lately with two consecutive 0-0′s in their previous games but lets not forget they are still the 2nd highest scorers in the league with 53 goals for the season. Already this season they have put 8 goals past Dundee in their two meetings so it’s fair to say we can expect at least a couple from them tomorrow, afterall they are playing against the worst defence in the league.
Another reason for selecting this fixture is that Dundee not only played last Sunday in the cup but also played midweek in the league, where they actually recorded a rare home victory 2-1 against St Mirren, but I can see fatigue playing its part in the game on Saturday. Inverness will be well rested having only played last Saturday and are also free of any real injury concerns and have a full squad to pick from, whereas Dundee still have a lengthy injury list to contend with.
I would say that Inverness for me have been the most impressive team in the league this season, given their form last season and credit must be given to Butch for having the balls to delve into the lower leagues in England when putting together this team as many were very sceptical pre-season about his selections but he has proved them all wrong. Indeed Butcher was offered managerial moves to England at around christmas time but credit to him he stated that as he was having his best season with Inverness and wanted to finish what he started.
It’s not easy to pinpoint why there is a lack of goals in the Inverness team at the moment with players like Foran, Doran, Shinnie and top scorer McKay all in the team but I reckon they will find the net at least twice tomorrow. Dundee under new Skipper John Brown seem to be a bit grittier and rely on effort more than skill in their matches but Inverness have a very big and physical team and should more than hold their own. I have noticed 2 key areas of real weakness for Dundee, their poor veteran goalie Rab Douglas who isn’t up to scratch anymore and also their lack of a goal scoring threat upfront. So if Inverness can just find their scoring boots again I see them rolling out comfortable winners.
Probable Score : Dundee 0-2 Inverness
