We enter the fifth round of the William Hill Scottish Cup this weekend, and there looks to be value in the early kick off…
Dundee United v The Rangers
SPL versus SFL3? A team with a new manager and some of the best SPL players versus a team reliant on youngsters, and not particularly good ones at that?
This match has been bubbling under the surface ever since Charles Green took it upon himself to refuse the away allocation of tickets. Yet, some sensible souls ignored the loudmouth Yorkshireman’s misguided intentions and decided to follow their team to Tannadice regardless. I hope for their sake their team puts on a performance to showcase the SFL3 to a UK wide audience. Can’t see it, however.
Conceding goals in 7 of their 11 away SFL3 matches shows that the The Rangers backline is particularly weak, and they’ll find the going a lot tougher against Daly, Russell and Mackay-Steven. Their forays against opposition in higher leagues has shown that they will toil against teams who apply themselves, as Inverness Caledonian Thistle and Queen of the South showed earlier in the season.
Dundee United have been hovering just under 1/1, with BetVictor going 20/21, while William Hill and Bet365 offer 17/20. I like that for the straight up win, but will also be looking at the Dundee United goals market. Coral go 10/11 about McNamara’s men scoring two or more, something they have done in five of their last nine SPL matches.
Finally, take a chance on Johnny Russell scoring at anytime, a 15/8 poke with Stan James. The Coatbridge hitman was the subject of some deadline day offers, but none close to the £2million that United are looking for. He leads their scoring charts with 14 this season, and should have too much pace and quality not to find himself in with a goalscoring opportunity or two.
