It’s back to league business for both teams tonight with each being involved in the League Cup at the weekend. It’s the home side that will take a high into the match following their unexpected but well deserved 3-2 semi-final win over Celtic at Hampden.
Inverness were knocked out by 10 man Hearts and will be a little fatigued with the match going all the way to penalties. They missed a handful of chances on what was an off day for striker McKay, who has been on fire this season. St Mirren’s performance against Celtic was excellent and they were clearly boosted by the return of Paul McGowan to the team who really makes them tick. New boy Esmael Goncalves also marked his Buddies debut with the opening goal and looks to be a bit of a handful down the left wing.
The bookmakers have not got overly carried away with the cup results and have just about sensibly priced this up with St Mirren 2/1 (William Hill) for the win, Inverness 6/4 (Paddy Power) and the draw at 12/5 (Bet365).
The two have faced each other twice already this season with both games ending 2-2 at each respective ground but Inverness have by far the better league form this season sitting 2nd top of the table, whereas, St Mirren are struggling down the bottom only saved from relegation by Dundee. Inverness are unbeaten in their last 6 league games and have only been beaten once away from home (3 times all season), so they travel well and no doubt Terry Butcher will have them back fired up after the dissapointing cup defeat and will certainly make them hard to beat.
A stat that I like for this match is that Inverness have only failed to score on one occassion this season in the league, paired with the fact that St Mirren have scored in their last 8 home games in a row and only failed to score twice this season at home. This suggests to me that Both Teams To Score at 8/13 (Boylesports) is actually worth a punt or at least placed in an accumulator. Steven Thompson for St Mirren and McKay for Inverness are both picks for anytime scorers here.
The bet that I shall be selecting tonight though is stacked up by the stats above about Inverness’s away record i.e. only losing 1 in 10 away games. I really don’t see them losing this game as they are the better and more physical team so taking them for a win with the saftey net of Draw No Bet really appeals to me and there is still a decent price available which surprises me a little bit.
