Mansfield Town v Liverpool – Sunday 6 January – 4:00pm live on ESPN
Blue Square Bet Premier side Mansfield Town have their moment in the spotlight as they host Premier League giants Liverpool in front of the live TV cameras at Field Mill. Should the non-league outfit pull it off, it would go down as one the biggest upsets in the long history of the FA Cup.
The Stags will have to overturn a difference of 93 league positions if they want to progress into round four. As with all David v Goliath clash, they are sure to raise their game against their illustrious opposition but will that be enough?
They are ninth in their league but due to their cup exploits, they have games in hand, which if they won would take them into the top two. Their home record is decent with only two league defeats from 12 matches at Field Mill. They have knocked out Workington, Slough and Lincoln City en route to the third round.
Their danger man is top goalscorer Jake Speight. The forward began his career at Sheffield United but has played the majority of his career to date in the non-leagues.
Liverpool know all about being giant-killed. In the recent past, Northampton Town of League Two have knocked them out of the League Cup, so they will know they will have to put in a professional performance to avoid such embarrassment once again.
They have strengthened their attacking options with the addition of Daniel Sturridge brought in from Chelsea, and he is likely to feature to make his Reds debut with Luis Suarez rumoured to be rested by Brendan Rodgers.
The last non-league side to knock Liverpool out of the FA Cup was Worcester City in 1959. It would be a huge surprise if the non-leaguers repeated that feat on Sunday afternoon.
