Atletico find themselves in the welcomed position of being eight points ahead of their city rivals as the sides prepare for their first derby of the season. Falcao and co have been imperious of late, winning their last five in all competitions without conceding a goal.
Which is certainly a better record than Madrid’s recent form following their loss at Betis last week.
Jose Mourinho’s side have not slipped up often this season but when they have met decent opposition, they have struggled. Barcelona, Dortmund, Man City, Sevilla and Valencia make up the list of teams Madrid have failed to defeat- as well as Getafe and Betis- and Atletico are arguably as good, if not better, than most of those sides.
With Falcao leading the line, Atletico can be confident of matching any opposition, even that of Ballon d’Or nominee Cristiano Ronaldo. There is undoubtedly a lack of harmony at the Bernabeu and this is perhaps Atletico’s best opportunity to make a claim as being the capital’s top team.
Not since 1999 have Atletico won against in their illustrious neighbours’ backyard but as we say, Diego Simeone’s current side are better than they have ever been in that time – twenty-three wins in their last twenty-six matches is testament to their ability and it is therefore unreasonable to think that Simeone’s side can’t continue their great run, particularly given the odds of 13/2 against an away win this weekend.
