Bayer Leverkusen v Chelsea

UEFA Champions League

Kick off: Wednesday 23rd November, 7.45pm. Live on ITV 1

When you’re boss at one of the biggest clubs in the country you’re only ever a few bad results away from a crisis. With just one win their last six 90 minutes Andres Villas-Boas knows that defeat tonight could plunge his future into serious doubt.

A draw would still keep the Blues’ noses in front of Group E rivals Leverkusen and Valencia but a confidence boosting win would guarantee their progression to the second, more than can be said of either half of Manchester after last night’s results.

Defeat wouldn’t be the end of the world. But they would need to win the final fixture at home to Valencia. Whether Villas-Boas would still be in charge for that one would be a different matter.

Much like Cheslea, Leverkusen’s form can be best described as “patchy”. Their 2-1 win at over Valencia on Matchday 3 was followed by a 3-1 reverse at the Mestalla. Sympomatic of a season in which they haven’t really got started. However 7 points from their last 3 Bundesliga matches and 2 home home wins from 2 in the Champions League suggest Chelsea won’t have it all their own way.

This isn’t a game Chelsea can afford to take lightly but I think they can put some dodgy results behind them and get something from the game tonight. Confidence may be low but they’ve too much experience at this level to be unable to cope with this Leverkusen side. The Germans feel they played well at Stamford Bridge but were still on the end of a 2-0 defeat. Odds around 13/10 (William Hill) on the Chelsea win do look a touch short so I’d rather cover the bet at 8/13 by taking them on the Draw No Bet market with SkyBet.

Another bet that catches my eye is the last team to score. Given that I think Chelsea will get at least a point I’m going on the basis that they’ll score. To score the game’s final goal it’s 5/6 at SkyBet. Their plans to nick something from the game may rely on a late onslaught and 5/6 looks a decent price to be on should they grab the last.
