Monday night football moves down into League One this week with the international break halting action in the Premier League as Charlton Athletic host Sheffield Wednesday at The Valley.
The home side have began the season well, and will be looking to keep up their unbeaten start to the campaign and keep the pressure on MK Dons and Sheffield United at the top of the table. The Addicks have won four and drawn one of their first five league games, so come into this fixture full of confidence.
Wednesday have enjoyed a mixed start to the season and sit in 12th with nine points from five games. They have won each of their first three home matches but have failed to win a single point on the road.
Charlton have spent the summer signing players. 18 in fact. The squad has had major surgery after a couple of disappointing seasons in League One. Their aim is promotion at all costs, and they will have the latest newcomer, Michael Smith, available following his transfer from Darlington.
The Owls are also looking for promotion. On deadline day, Gary Megson added striker Ryan Lowe from Bury and defender David Kasnik on loan from Olimpija Ljubljana to their ranks. Both players are available for selection and could feature.
Charlton have been in great form so far this season and are available at evens (general). Sheffield Wednesday, looking to break their away day duck for this season, can be backed at 14/5 (BetVictor) with the draw at 5/2 (William Hill).
Despite Charlton’s terrific early-season form and Wednesday’s terrible run on the road, I still fancy the Owls to get something from this one. Perhaps not the win, but I think they can take a point back to Hillsborough. My score prediction is 1-1, which is best priced at 6/1 (888 Sport).
Ryan Lowe should make his Wednesday debut, and is in cracking form having netted seven goals for Bury so far this season. He is a massive 8/1 (SkyBet) to open the scoring. That appears to be great value.
