Wednesday’s Premier League Tips
Premier League | selectabet | December 16, 2009 at 5:25 pm
In a second instalment of midweek Premier League action, Betfair’s “Mystical” Mike Norman can see victories for Arsenal and Chelsea but reckons Liverpool are set to struggle again.
Burnley 7.6 v Arsenal 1.53; The Draw 4.5
It’s rather worrying that Burnley – who have collected just the one solitary point away from home – have won just the once in their last four home games. If the victories at Turf Moor dry up, then the Clarets’ excellent start to their first ever Premier League campaign will count for absolutely nothing come the end of the season.
The Arsenal boys – still with the sound of Arsene Wenger’s hairdryer ringing in their ears – will want to build on that excellent victory over Liverpool at the weekend, and I simply can’t see beyond an away victory here.
Arsenal/Arsenal at 2.34 appeals in the Half Time/Full Time market, if only because I don’t think Cesc Fabregas and co dare rattle Wenger’s ‘first-half’ cage again. I doubt it will be a stroll in the park however, so Correct Scores of 0-1 (8.6) and 0-2 (8.8) appeal, as does the Under 2.5 Goals option – available to back at 2.24.
Chelsea 1.17 v Portsmouth 27.0; The Draw 8.8
A few weeks ago it was Manchester United that I couldn’t get right… now it’s Chelsea. So special thanks to the fixture list for pitting the Blues against Pompey at a time when I desperately need to get the outcome of a Chelsea match correct. So I’m going for a home victory; I’m a brave soul aren’t I?
Portsmouth haven’t been playing too badly in recent weeks, and former Chelsea boss Avram Grant will know better than most managers how to set up a team to try and avoid a heavy defeat. The problem is, knowing and doing are two completely different things and I believe the home side will run out easy winners tonight. Back Any Unquoted in the Correct Score market at 3.6. This is my only bet of the game, and also my best bet of the night.
Liverpool 1.35 v Wigan 12.5; The Draw 5.4
I bet the Liverpool fans can’t wait for the FA Cup to start in January, just so they know how it feels to be in a football competition again! Three wins in 15 games (all competitions) says it all really, and even playing at home against a side that lost 9-1 recently, I’m not confident enough about Rafa Benitez’s men returning to winning ways, therefore lay Liverpool at 1.36.
Every week there’s usually a game that you can’t work out, and for me, this one is it. History between the two clubs gives us no clues, the form of each side ahead of the game is questionable, and even trying to predict the likely line-ups is nigh on impossible.
So let’s follow the old saying that form is temporary, class is permanent and back Steven Gerrard in the To Score market at around 2.5. By his own admission he hasn’t been at his brilliant best of late (just one league goal since September), so if the Reds do begin to struggle on the night, then who better than their captain to drag them out of the mire?
- Best Bet: Back Any Unquoted score @ 3.6 in Chelsea v Portsmouth
- Also: Back Arsenal HT/Arsenal FT @ 2.34 in Burnley v Arsenal
- And: Back Steven Gerrard To Score @ 2.5 in Liverpool v Wigan
