Aberdeen v Rangers
Live on Sky Sports 3. Kick off 12.45pm
Saturday’s lunch time kick-off should be a cracker up in the Granite City. A long-standing rivalry permeates this fixture with an underlying hatred amongst the fans. So much so that traveling Dons supporters endear themselves to Celtic fans by singing “We hate Rangers more than you”; a point not lost on the blue half of the city. Make no mistake there is no love lost when these two meet.
That goes some of the way to explaining the recent run of results in this fixture. It’s always been a tough place for Rangers to get a result, one win in their last 8 visits bears that out. But Aberdeen also managed a 0-0 draw at Ibrox this season and despite their own form lagging somewhat we can expect them to give the Champions a run for their money at odds of 7/2 (Bet365, Betfred, Boylesports, Coral, Expekt).
The Dons may have won just once in their last 8 matches but boss Mark McGhee has a decent record against Walter Smith. In the last two seasons whilst boss at Motherwell, Smith’s side failed to win on four visits to Fir Park.
As for Rangers they come into this off the back of yet another Champions League lesson, this time dished out by the Bundesliga’s third bottom team, Stuttgart. The German’s 16 attempts to Rangers 1 tells it’s own story and the Bears will need to step up a gear to come away with the three points tomorrow.
Rangers are best priced at 9/10 (Canbet) to grab the win that would keep them top of the league but it’s not for me. The value has to be in siding with the Dons in some way. 7/2 on the home win is a decent price but 3 of the last 5 meetings have finish all square so backing Aberdeen in the Draw No Bet market (9/4 Bet365, Blue Sq, Ladbrokes, Paddy Power, Stan James, William Hill) or with a +0.5 goals of a start at 21/20 with Ladbrokes make more appeal.
It’s worth bearing in mind that 2 (out of 4) of Rangers’ away games this season have finished goalless and all 5 of the last meetings at Pittodrie have finished under 2.5 goals. It could be we’re in for another low-scoring affair tomorrow. Expekt go 17/20 on the game finishing with fewer than 3 goals and that could be a decent bet.
