Debrecen v Liverpool
Live on Sky Sports 2. Kick off Tuesday 7.45pm
Liverpool need to pull off yet another great escape if they’re to extend their stay in this season’s Champions League. A win in Debrecen may not be enough if Fiorentina defeat the already qualified Lyon. Their hopes look forlorn but they must keep up their end of the bargain to stand any chance.
But that won’t be easy for a side that have won just once in the last ten games and will be without their talismanic striker Fernando Torres. Ryan Babel and Albert Riera also miss out and whilst their presence won’t be missed as much as Torres it does minimise Rafa Benitez’s attacking options.
The Hungarians obviously aren’t the best team in the group but do deserve some respect. Sure they lost 0-4 at home to Lyon but they lost to the odd goal in seven at home to Fiorentina. They also pushed Liverpool all the way on Matchday 1 when the Reds eked out a 1-0 win. Odds of 11/1 (SkyBet, betChronicle) look huge, especially given Liverpool’s current run of results. Those kind of odds on any team at home in the Champions League have to be looked at twice.
In a game where all the pressure will be on Liverpool Paddy Power go 7/1 on Debrecen in the Draw No Bet market. Again that looks on the generous side and is worth considering. To get the win they so badly need Liverpool are a best priced 4/11 (Boylesports, Ladbrokes) but there’s no way I’d part with my cash at those odds on a team who’ve not won in five.
If you do believe in miracles, and boy do Liverpool know how to conjure them up in this competition, then take a look at Canbet’s 6/1 that it’s the Reds and not Fiorentina who qualify from the group.
As far as tonight goes it could be another tight affair. Liverpool minus Torres are not as potent, especially if N’gog is given a starting berth alone up front. They’ll also be desperate to keep it tight at the back as the last thing they need is to be chasing down a one-goal deficit. Debrecen aren’t exactly prolific in front of goals either. They’re the second lowest scorers in the top half of the Hungarian league with 22 in 13 so going Under 2.5 goals could be the way to go. It’s tidily priced at 7/5 (betChronicle) and looks like the best option for a return tonight.
