Things are definitely on the up for Villa at the moment. Just one defeat in 9 sees them back to the kind of winning form that heralded Martin O’Neill’s arrival in the hot-seat and they’ll fancy another 3 points in today lunch time clash with Wolves at Molineux.

Be wary though as Villa’s two defeats this season have come to teams beneath them in the table (Blackburn & Wigan) whilst they’ve fared well against those in and around the top 6. Perhaps Villa’s counter-attacking style is more suited to playing teams such as Liverpool and Chelsea on the break rather than having to force the play on the opposition. Whatever the reason, one thing that is not in doubt is their threat from set pieces. 9 of their 12 league goals have come from dead-ball situations, a feature of Martin O’Neill’s sides, and Richard Dunne has popped up with 2 in his last two. He’s a big-priced 10/1 (Bet365, Paddy Power) to net again today and could be worth an interest.

As for Wolves, well they find themselves in 16th position in the league and have yet to play a side in the big four so it could be a long, long season for Mick McCarthy’s men. They’ve scored just 8 in their last 11 and face a Villa side who have the best defensive record in the league (lost 7 goals in 8 games) so it’s hard to make a case for the home win today. It’s over 30 years wince Wolves since they last won this fixture, a run that includes 12 Villa wins and 2 draws. Wolves are 13/5 (Blue Sq, Totesport) but I just can’t see them being good enough to take anything from the game if Villa are on decent form yet again.

The money has to be with Villa this lunch time at odds of 5/4 (Coral).
