Go for the Minnows to Take a Tanking

International weekend. Yawn, Yawn, Yawn.

Is it just me or can anyone else out there really get excited about International football? It just seems so dull until the big tourneys come around. But there’s no point in moping around waiting for the real stuff to kick back into action and I’m going to try my correct score bet again, in the hope that I’ll strike it lucky at last.

I’ve come close to a nice payout on a couple of occasions with this bet so fingers crossed today. In any World Cup qualifying group there’s always a few total mis-matches. There’s no value to be had in backing the favourites so I’m turning my attention to the spread on the correct scores in three of today’s games.

Germany v Lichtenstein

First up it’s Germany at home to neighbours, Lichtenstein. The Germans have scored 23 goals against the minnows in their last 3 meetings, most recently a 6-0 away win in 2008. With an average of just over 7 per game against today’s opposition I’m going to cover the spread of 6-0, 7-0 and 8-0 wins for the Germans. One slight concern is that Lichtenstein have scored twice against Germany but I’m gonna go with a clean sheet for the home side in any case.

Russia v Azerbaijan

Also in Group 4 Guus Hiddink’s Russia host Azerbaijan, who have failed to find the net in their 3 qualifying games so far against Lichtenstein, Wales and Finland. To me that means there’s a decent chance they won’t be good enough to score against the Russians. So it’s all about how many Russia will score? Their most recent home game was a comfortable 3-0 win over Finland and with the likes of Arshavin and Pavlychenko on board you’d think they’ll have goals in them today. So I’m going with the spread of 3-0, 4-0 & 5-0.

Holland v Scotland

Finally, Holland just have to be backed to comfortably see off George Burley’s depleted Scotland side in Amsterdam this evening. With no Kris Boyd to select and the impotent Kenny Miller looking likely to start I just can’t see Scotland getting on the scoresheet. The Scots have scored just 3 goals in their last 6 games so again it’s all about how many Holland will score. The Tartan Army won’t need reminding that their last tiptoe through the tulips led to a 6-0 drubbing and while I don’t think it’ll be quite so many for the Dutch this time, it won’t be too far off. I’m going with 3-0, 4-0 & 5-0.

The Bet

I put my bet on at SkyBet. It’s basically 27 trebles (3×3x3), although you can only actually get one treble up. Wish me luck!

It was a case of close but no cigar yet again.

None of the picks lost a goal but Russia only managed a 2-0 win, while Germany won 4-0. Holland obliged however with a 3-0 at home to Scotland.

I’m determined to get this bet up though and I’ll be trying again this midweek.
