What to buy a Gambler for Christmas?

Betting, Chit-Chat, General Posts, Reviews | selectabet | December 14, 2008 at 5:24 pm

It’s usually around this time of year that people ask me what I want for Christmas – the older I get the less I need but the one thing I want is to become better at bashing the bookies. I’m not a big book-reader but over the last couple of years I’ve picked up a few books that have given me a greater insight into the psychology, probability and science of beating the odds.

So what do you buy a gambler Christmas?

Fixed Odds Sports Betting: Statistical Forecasting and Risk Management by Joseph Buchdahl

This one is top of my list this year. After reading a few reviews it seems like I’ve been missing out on something. It focuses on fixed odds betting (like football) it looks like it’ll do for me. It also features key pointers when it come to staking plans – something I’ve struggled with recently. So I’m looking forward to getting my hands on this one.

Taking Chances: Winning with Probability by John Haigh

This one is also on my list to Santa. Written by University of Sussex mathematician John Haigh who specialises in statistical analysis and probability. By all accounts this looks like an informative read. The latest edition even covers the chances of you winning at Who Wants to be a Millionaire and The Weakest Link.

Reminiscences of a Stock Operator by William J. ONeil

As recommended by my friend Matt over at Punt.com, he reckons that this is the first place any serious gambler or trader should begin. Understand the basic of how markets work, whether they be sports betting or stock trading and you’ll stand a much better chance of making money from your investments. A must read.

Profitable Football Betting by Paul Steele

I actually got this book two Chrimbo’s ago but I still find myself referring back to it from time to time. It’s a bit dated now but what you’ll learn from this book still applies. If you’re interesting in devising a football betting system then this book will give you an insight into how to go about it and how much work you’ll need to put in.

Winning on Betfair for Dummies By Alex Gowar, Jack Houghto

This is another book that I’ve got that’s been well-thumbed. It doesn’t exactly do as the title suggests, i.e. tell you how to win but it’s great introduction to the world’s biggest betting exchange. And because it’s ‘for Dummies’ it’s got great little pieces of info, tips and trivia. Perfect for the Betfair novice.
