Manchester City v Manchester United – Live on Sky Sports 1. Kick off 1.30pm

man city v man utd

The World’s Biggest Club v The World’s Richest. Ronaldo v Robinho. The Sorcerer v His Apprentice. Seldom before has a Manchester Derby had so many sub-plots – and I can’t wait for what should be a cracker.

City go into this one looking for their third consecutive derby win after recording the double over United last term and if they can repeat the kind of display that saw them beat Arsenal 3-0 last Saturday then they’ll cause United all sorts of problems.

Who’ll hit the net?

Robinho is at the heart of all that is good about City and he looks set to return after missing out on the midweek win at Schalke. He’s scored 9 goals so far this season and all but one have been at the City of Manchester Stadium so it’s easy to see his importance to Mark Hughes’ side. The Brazilian is handily priced at odds of 9/1 (Bet365) to open the scoring and 11/4 (Bet365, Ladbrokes, William Hill) to score at any time during the game and he’ll have plenty of supporters in the blue half of Manchester at that price.

Another man who’ll have plenty of money behind him to net during the game is Steven Ireland who has scored 4 in his last 3 games. He’s as big as 5/1 (William Hill) to score for City and 14/1 (Bet365, Betfred, Ladbrokes) to grab the first of the match.

United are likely to welcome back Dimitar Berbatov from injury and after two 0-0 draws Sir Alex will be hoping he can spark the team into goal scoring action. The Bulgarian is 6/1 (Bet Direct, Blue Sq, Boylesports, Ladbrokes, SkyBet, William Hill) to be first goalscorer on his return and 9/4 (Ladbrokes) to score in the 90 minutes – but wait until the teams are confrimed before diving in to back him as he may well start on the bench.

One certain starter is Cristiano Ronaldo and whilst he’s not quite hit the heights of last season just yet he’s still considered United’s biggest goal threat as the bookies have him at 13/8 (Boylesports) favourite to hit the back of the net. Wane Rooney is still one goal short of his career 100th and he’d just love to score it in tomorrow’s derby. If you fancy that he will you can back him at odds of 9/4 (William Hill).

Fergie to leave Sparky feeling Blue?

As for the match result, City are very tempting at 7/2 with William Hill and they’ll be on many coupons up and down the country. But Sir Alex knows that his side cannot afford to fall any further behind Liverpool and Chelsea and after missing an opportunity to close the gap last week I can’t see United losing this one. The best odds on a Man United win are 10/11 at Bet Direct, Betfred, Boylesports, Ladbrokes, Stan James, Totesport, VCBet.

Goals, Goals, Goals?

But I think the best bet could be on the number of goals in the match. Sure United have drawn a blank in the last two games but surely they can’t go a third game in a row without scoring? City have scored 12 in their last 5 and average almost 3 a game at home so there’s no reason why we shouldn’t expect to see the net bulging tomorrow. Over 2.5 goals is 4/5 at Paddy Power and I’ll be having some of that.

As an alternative to the overs bet, Bet365 are going 4/6 that both teams manage to score – that’s not a bad shout if you ask me.

In my selectaion for Challenge Lawro I’ve gone with a longshot result of Man City 2 Man Utd 4 – If it lands at 66/1 (Blue Sq, Centrebet) don’t forget you heard it here first! :)

Enjoy the game!
