St Mirren v Celtic

Champions Celtic make their last ever trip to St. Mirren’s Love Street stadium in search of 3 points that would move them 7 points clear of Glasgow rivals Rangers at the top of the SPL. But Gordon Strachan’s injury problems are piling up ahead of their crucial Champions League game in Denmark on Tuesday and he’ll be leaving it to the last minute to see what players he has available for tomorrows lunch time clash.

On recent form there should only be one winner. Celtic have won 10 games on the spin whilst St Mirren haven’t won in 5. At their Love Street home, St Mirren have only lost 3 goals in six games, including a shock 1-0 victory of Rangers. But… they’ve only scored 2 goals in those 6 matches and are the leagues lowest goal scorers with just 9 in 14. Those stats don’t suggest they have the firepower to trouble the Celtic defence.

The away win is a short price as you’d expect at just 1/3 (Bet365, Betfred, Boylesports, Coral, Paddy Power, SkyBet, Totesport) but it looks about right. The Buddies are as big as 10/1 (Ladbrokes) but it would be a major shock if they could get a result against Celtic as well as Rangers.

St Mirren Nil?

So there’s not much value in the match betting but one market that does look interesting is for Celtic to keep a clean sheet. Paddy Power go 4/5 and given that St Mirren have only scored two at home all season that’s not a bad shout. Assuming the Hoops do manage a clean sheet it might be worth taking the 6/5 at Totesport on them to win the game without conceding.

Shunsuke to Naka the Saints?

With Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink out and Scott McDonald still feeling the effects of a bug it’s likely that Celtic’s top scorer, Georgios Samaras, will make a return to the starting line-up and he’s 4/1 (Betfred, Blue Sq, SkyBet) to open the scoring. The last time the two sides met in Paisley it was a ‘controversial’ Shunsuke Nakamura free-kick that won it late on for the Champions and he’s a tempting 11/4 (Blue Sq) to net in the 90 minutes again.
