After their sensational injury-time comeback at the Emirates, Harry Redknapp’s Spurs host top of the table Liverpool in tomorrow’s live Premier League match on Setanta Sports. A repeat of Wednesday’s 4-4 scoreline is on offer at a massive 425/1 with Paddy Power and given Spurs’ dodgy defence you wouldn’t rule it our entirely.
A seemingly rejuvenated Tottenham side will provide a stern test for Rafa Benitez’s men who are aiming to extend their unbeaten run to 18 games in the Premier League.
A step too far for Harry?
Harry Redknapp’s impact at the club has been instantaneous which has been reflected in the betting with bookies making the home side a best priced 11/4 (Betfred, Coral, Paddy Power) to claim all three points – two weeks ago that’d be nearer 5/1. But Liverpool fans will also be wading into the 23/20 on offer from VCBet on their side picking up another vital 3 points – you can actually get slightly better odds if you back the Reds at Bet365 on the Asian Handicap, where you can have 47/40 on them with -0.5 of a start.
Benitez has never lost a match to Spurs as Liverpool boss, winning 5 and drawing 3. In fact, Spurs have failed to score in the last three meetings at White Hart Lane. But although this is a top v bottom clash it’ll be a lot closer than it looks on paper. Redknapp has players playing in the right positions, giving the team a more fluid look to it and 4 points from two games so far belies their lowly league position. And, whilst no-one can deny Liverpool’s right to sit atop the Premier League, they have undoubtedly had their fair share of luck in getting there and many pundits are questioning just how long their good fortune will last. So this one looks tricky to call.
The home crowd will be absolutely buzzing at their club’s dramatic and timely reversal of fortunes and they should be in for a cracking match. But I think this might be step too far for them. My biggest concern is in their defence and especially their goalkeeper, Gomes, who is a complete liability. It’s almost certain that Liverpool will find the net so that means Spurs will need to score twice at the other end to win and I’m just not sure they’re capable of breaching the Liverpool rearguard that easily. With the attacking prowess at Liverpool’s disposal I think they’ll be too strong for Spurs and I’d have to go for an away win.
Spurs won’t be Keane to see Robbie again
The game sees Robbie Keane return to the ground where was adored – it’ll be interesting to see what kind of reception he’ll get. And wouldn’t it just be typical for him to score his first Premier League goal for his new club at White Hart Lane. The Irishman is 2/1 (Coral, Ladbrokes) to score at anytime during the 90 mins and that’s got to be worth a small investment. He’s 6/1 (888 Sport, Bet365, Blue Sq, Betfred, Centrebet, Coral, Ladbrokes, Pagebet, VCBet) to be first goalscorer.
Wednesday’s match-winner Steven Gerrard is 7/1 (Centrebet, Paddy Power) to open the scoring and 12/5 (Paddy Power) to score in the 90.
Spurs best bet of a goal looks to be Darren bent at the moment. He netted at the Emirates in midweek and is 11/4 (William Hill) to bag another in this one. His strike partner, Roman Pavlyuchenko is also 11/4 to find the net.
Another goalfest at the Lane?
Although Liverpool haven’t been scoring too many recently with the absence of Torres I think this game has goals written all over it. There’s no way that Spurs defence will keep a clean sheet against the likes of Gerrard, Keane, Kuyt and Babel, whilst at the same time they’re always good for a goal or two at home. Taking the Gomes factor into account I think Canbet’s 51/50 on there being over 2.5 goals looks incredibly generous and I’ll be having some of that.
