Lewis Hamilton has left the field trailing in his wake to take Pole Position and be the bookies favourite at the German Grand Prix. He left it late in qualifying but his fastest lap round the Hockenheim circuit puts him ahead of Ferrari’s Felipe Massa and team-mate Heikki Kovalainen on today’s grid.

It’s no surprise then that the bookies make Hamilton the clear favourite to win his second successive Grand Prix. He tore up the field last time out at Silverstone and is just 7/10 (Centrebet) to take maximum points this weekend.

Massa is 2nd favourite at 11/4 (888 Sport, Bet Direct, BetInternet, Blus Sq, Coral, Ladbrokes), with Kimi Räikkönen at 12/1 (Sportingbet) and Kovalainen 18/1 (Sportingbet).

Hamilton is aiming to become the first Brit to win the German Grand Prix since Eddie Irvine in 1999 and his third pole of the season gives him an opportunity to dictate the race at Hockenheim. Rain is forecast in Hockenheim today and that will suit Hamilton and his Brazilian team-mate Rubens Barrichello who both handled the wet conditions well at the British Grand Prix.

Barrichello is 18th on the grid though, so has his work cut out to make the podium, hence the 80/1 available at SkyBet for him to do so. Instead look to the 5/1 (888 Sport, Bet365, Blue Sq) available on him finishing in the points today.
