Number 3 seed Novak Djokovic crashed out of Wimbedon this afternoon to 350-1 outsider Marat Safin, leaving Roger Federer at odds-on to successfully defend his Wimbledon title.

Djokovic was scheduled to meet Federer in the semi-finals but he was beaten in straight sets by former World Number one, Safin and bookies have reacted by making Federer just 4/7 (888 Sport, Bet365, Bet Direct, Blue Sq, Coral, Paddy Power, SkyBet, Stan James, Totesport) to retain his crown.

Darren Haines, spokesman for Paddy Power, said: “Djokovic was the first big upset in the tournament but it’s not all bad news for tennis punters as it undoubtedly strengthens the cause of Mr Wimbledon himself, Roger Federer.”

Whereas William Hill’s viewpoint was “Federer & Nadal are terrible results and our best hope was that Djokovic would come to our rescue by winning the title. Our Wimbledon book is now dependent on Roddick and Murray, which does not fill us with confidence,” according to Hill’s spokesman Rupert Adams.

Meanwhile Stan James cut Safin to 50/1 to win the tournament following his win.

Rafael Nadal’s price continues to fall and he’s available at just 7/4 (888 Sport, Bet365, Blue Sq, Coral, SkyBet).

Outsiders Roddick and Murray are best priced 18/1 (Bet Direct, Stan James) and 28/1 (888 Sport, Bet Direct, Blue Sq, Stan James, Totesport) respectively.
