Boxing: Make Haye While the Sun Shines

It’s the battle of Britian in the early of hours of Sunday morning as David Haye and Enzo Maccarinelli square up to each other in the ring in a World Cruiserweight unification clash.

This one should be a cracker!

It’s just a pity that it’s on at 2am in the morning on Setanta Sports, rather than the primetime ITV slots that fueled the nation’s adrenalin when the likes of Benn, Eubank and Collins were strutting their stuff. But that’s an aside…

As a contest it looks a close one to call. Haye is favourite, but not by much in boxing terms. He’s best priced at 7/10 (BetInternet), with Maccarinelli not much further behind him at 6/4 with Ladbrokes.

Both men have very similar records, each suffering just one defeat. Haye has amassed 20 KOs from 21 bouts, Maccarinelli is almost as impressive with 21 KOs from 29.

Haye is promising to ‘massacre’ his opponent and his best chance may well be to do so in the early rounds. Pundits are suggesting that the longer it goes the more like Maccarinelli’s staying power will tell. If Haye can deliver an explosive start then the 9/2 on him winning in the first 3 rounds at Bet365 looks a good call. Otherwise they reckon it might pay to side with Welshman, Maccarinelli to to take it by a Decision or TKO at 8/1 with Bet365.

For me, I like the look of Haye and think he’s a real star in the making. He’s done little wrong in getting this far in his career and has great potential ahead of him. I expect he’ll win it so will be taking the 7/10 at BetInternet. I think a small wager on him taking it after the last bell at 8/1 with Bet365 might also be worthwhile.
