Bet: Red Star to give Gers the Blues

Red Star Belgrade v Rangers
Champions League, 3rd Qualifying Round, 2nd Leg

I’ve tried to leave this till the very last minute before deciding to get on Red Star. I just heard Walter Smith state that for many of his inexperienced team this is the first time they would face something like tonight. Its a game that Rangers don’t need to win and judging by the line-up it looks like they’ll be content to keep Red Star at bay. Darcheville starts up front alone but the Gers have plenty of firepower on the bench in Boyd, Cousin and Novo if need be.

For me the Rangers defence hasn’t been tested greatly this season and will come under a new level of pressure tonight as Red Star seek to claw back the one-goal deficit. The stadium will be intimidating and make no mistake, Red Star need this win as much as much as Rangers, as testified by their canceling of the weekend’s fixture in order to prepare properly for tonight.

So, onto the betting; I was really tempted to go with Red Star to qualify, which was 9/4 at both PaddyPower and skybet, but I resisted and went with the safer option of Red Star to win in the 90. Stan James had Red Star at 11/10 in the win-draw-win market, but also had them at 11/10 on the Asian Handicap which is split at 0,-0.5 – which effectively means that if the game is drawn you get half your stake back. Needless to say I’ve gone with the Asian Handicap option.

Selection: Red Star win on Asian Handicap (0,-0.5). £67.29 @ 11/10 with Stan James

  1. 35 mins. 0-0. Red Star look a poor team and have rarely threatened, Rangers seem to have things under control.

  2. HT and its 0-0. Rangers seem to be in reasonable control and if anything are probably more likely to sneak a goal in the 2nd half.

  3. FT 0-0. Rangers were largely untroubled in the match and Red Star looked as though they could have played all night without finding the net (or even a shot at goal). The Red Star fans were great and look like they deserve a better team.

As for the bet, I’ve lost half of it to leave myself with a balance of £100.94 – £20,000 feels like a long way off.
